Insurance Benefits for Personal Property Damage in Your Home

Posted by Diane Zimmerman | Nov 02, 2022 | 0 Comments

Your homeowners' insurance policies should contain coverage for damages to your personal property in your home (so long as the damage was not caused by a flood, which is subject to a separate policy).

Your belongings are protected when they are inside your home (and may also be protected outside). Your coverage may depend on what caused the damage. Some policies will protect your belongings from known and specified damages, while others would provide more open-ended coverage.

Your personal property protection will be a certain percentage of the overall value of your policy. For example, if you have $300,000 of coverage overall, you may have $100,000 in personal property coverage. Each policy may have different levels, and it is up to you to know your coverage before you get it.

Insurance policies may also differ on how they cover your personal property. One major distinction is how you are paid. Some policies will pay you based on the value of your personal property at the time that it was damaged. These are called actual value policies. A replacement value policy will compensate you based on the money that you must to replace the damaged property.

Your personal coverage may not be as broad as you think. Insurance companies have a way of excluding certain high-value items, for which you need separate coverage or a rider. These exceptions could include expensive jewelry. Oftentimes, insurance companies try to shoehorn everything that they can into an exclusion.
